About the Sand Painter Katrin Weissensee
As the daughter of a passionate magician, the sand painter Katrin Weißensee came into contact with audiences and entertainment art early on. She used to love to accompany her father on the weekends to his events. She was fascinated by how he made his audience laugh and marvel and of course the flair of the events themselves.
Art and culture were an essential part of her childhood. After the first recorder lessons, she intensively learned the subjects clarinet and saxophone in a Thuringian youth wind orchestra. At the age of 15 she also performed as a magician and juggler with her father and brother on the stages of central Germany. And yet Katrin's greatest passions have always been painting and inventing stories. Since her earliest childhood she had painted everything she could get her hands on. Her favourite used to be walls and later also small and tall people. "Art must live and be there where it is perceived – even in passing." |
After successfully completing her studies in business administration, Katrin Weißensee took a stony path and moved to Berlin without any financial cushion or guarantee of success. She created various artistic acts on the open stages of the city. Among other things, she developed picture stories, painted in black light while presenting it to piano music and self-composed ballads.
Besides she worked for Lebenshilfe Berlin and for the social project "Manege" in the Rütli district in Neukölln, one of the worst focal points of Berlin. There, children and young people with a migration background should be supported in their free time. With them she built, among other things, large papier-mâché sculptures for the Carnival of Cultures. In the winter of 2006/ 2007 she discovered the art of sand painting and was fascinated from the very first moment by the idea of creating her own, audience-appealing sand stories. Since then, the sand artist Katrin Weißensee has been performing with her completely unique style at top-class gala events, in vaudeville theatres, at sports events,... before well-known personalities from politics, sport, business and society throughout Germany and internationally. |
